My research aims to explain why land plants (Embryophyta) have diversified into >350.000 species, and why the majority of those species are concentrated in relatively few "hyperdiverse" ecosystems. I approach this question by reconstructing the plant Tree of Life and relating it to the geographic distribution, ecology and function of plant species. I do this at various phylogenetic and geographic scales, ranging from model groups (such as the palm family, Arecaceae) for which high-quality data is available or can be produced, to integrative Big Data studies covering most of the Land Plant lineage. By shedding light on some of the natural dynamics that have caused plants to diversify I hope to inform the debate about what is currently being lost due to human activities and how long it may take to recover.
Besides my own research I supervise the Plant Evolution and Biodiversity group at AU. For more information about me and my group see https://pebgroup.github.io/
