Yoga and mindfulness as a fluctuating field

Abstract

Yoga and meditation are two significant ritual techniques originating in Indian religions which have acquired immense popularity in Western religious and secular settings as increasingly mainstream practices. This article describes and analyses the two practices in their contemporary contexts, based on previous and ongoing mappings of religious and spiritual practices in Denmark. Both yoga and mindfulness have become global and are used in spiritual and secular health-oriented contexts, as well as being re-appropriated to new religious contexts. As phenomena they are recognisable and yet diverse, and in both semantic and practical settings they are fluid. As originally Hindu and Buddhist salvific and performative rituals, in Denmark they have also acquired meaning and function as spiritual self-development and wellness practices for the body and mind.
