Abstract

In this paper, we argue that social media like Twitter can be used in education to create new forms of interaction and representation and vice a vis new possibilities of Bildung (edification, formation). Empirically, we base our analysis on the action research project Socio Media Edu-cation ¬¬(SME)– carried out from 2011-2014 in a Danish upper sec-ondary school class we followed from start to end (Tække and Paulsen 2017). An important element of the SME experiment was that the class and its teachers had to use Twitter for written interac-tion in all subjects. Theoretically we based our argument on Inter-net research (Bruns 2008; Jenkins 2008; 2006), educational theory (Klafki 2004, Biesta 2006), medium theory (Finnemann 2005) and social theory (Luhmann 2006). We focus on how new social media like Twitter has an educational (Bildung) potential when it comes to school education. We develop the concept of teaching as a social activity that combines interaction and representation. Furthermore, we develop a historical framework for understanding interaction and representation in school in different media societies. We argue that before the Internet there was teaching using spoken language, writ-ing, book printing and analogue electronic media. Teaching was formed here as a closed interaction (within four walls) between stu-dents and teachers, where the outside world was represented through textbooks and the likes. In the new medium environment, which includes digital media, it becomes possible to create new forms of interaction and representation and thus new forms of edu-cation. In this article, we focus on how teachers and students can use Twitter to create educational relevant written interaction first inside the class and then later on this basis with third parties.
