The linguistic research in collocations carries an only 30 or 40 year old tradition. Dictionaries have selected and presented perhaps not exactly collocations but so-called examples shorter than a sentence. This contribution advocates going back to this tradition, selecting and presenting them in at least three kinds of dictionaries: Text production dictionaries, translation dictionaries and learning dictionaries. The lexicographic selection and presentation of such phrases or phrase combinations gets no help by the linguistic collocational research. What we need is a lexicographical oriented discussion about word combinations and their function in different types of dictionaries.
