Abstract

The tension between reality and fiction supports all artistic genres. Una novela criminal (2018) by Jorge Volpi, which belongs to the non-fiction novel genre, established by Rodolfo Walsh with Operación masacre (1957) and Truman Capote with In Cold Blood (1966), delves into this tension in order to dismantle the manipulation by the authorities of the Vallarta-Cassez judicial case. Instead of resolving the case, Volpi’s investigation has exposed the abuse of power by the Mexican state against the most vulnerable people. Acknowledging that he is not in control of a non-fiction plot, Volpi gives the reader the aesthetic and ethical role of questioning conventional power structures and becoming aware of the importance of transforming certain unjust realities of Mexican society.
