Drawing on results from a pilot study and the theoretical approaches of an ongoing research project, this presentation reflects upon the key elements that underpin international travel and vacation practices. Which are the collective imaginaries that saturate travel desires, which norms and values inform people’s travel choices, which are the competences that travelers need to navigate international mobility – and how can climate and sustainability concerns be integrated in these practices? Preliminary results indicate that climate concerns indeed are inching their way into people’s vacation and travel plans. So far only among a minority, but among a potentially trend setting minority. Preliminary results also point to some important practical, social and cultural barriers as well as potential enablers that block and potentially may facilitate a transition to more sustainable vacationing.
