Abstract
Despite the increasing importance of transcenting organisational boundaries through business models innovation both scholars and practitioners struggle with identifying the best ways to balance opening up their innovation process, their strategies and their business models. That is why our systematic literature review grounded in the business model literature aims at identifying antecedents and consequences of opening up as well as establishing open business models. As a result of the analysis of the 81 peer-reviewed articles from academic journals listed by Financial Times we develop a theoretical framework, which helps to shift attention from firm to network by converging the resource-based, stakeholder, and ecosystem theories as well as value chain/network concepts. Our study offers implications for theory and practice on the effective utilization of collaborative models.
