Abstract

This theory-developing paper argues that an ontology of education is essentially one of relations. These relations are multiple, hybrid, far-reaching and intertwined in complex ways. Seen as a whole they constitute an ever-expanding ecology. Two interconnected processes of expansion are proposed and discussed. One process concerns an ontological dimension of the real and potential relations in the world primarily through digital and non-digital technologies and the second process concerns an epistemological dimension of the multiple ways in which we come to know about the world through inquiry in the field of education. These processes are discussed in relation to the field of education. The paper further argues that the field of education itself both in practice and theory evolves and expands interrelated with these two dimensions and thateducation in the broadest possible sense comes to rely on a dialogic pedagogy to encompass this expansion.
