Abstract
This study aims to nuance our understanding of governance to manage supplier
sustainability suggesting that governance frameworks rarely are uniformly implemented
across a buying organization. Therefore, we ask how category managers manage supplier
sustainability and how they align with governance on a corporate level. This is based on
an in-depth qualitative study of a large Northern European retailer with suppliers
primarily in China. By exploring governance on the level of individual category
managers, we provide a differentiated perspective on sustainability governance and
illuminate how category managers may vary in their management of suppliers potentially
influencing supplier sustainability.
