Abstract
The survey on project management methodologies used in the Half Double Community was conducted in September 2020; it consisted of a set of questions related to the use of project management methodologies in Danish organizations. The purpose of this survey was to lay out the landscape of project management methodologies used in Danish organizations to learn which are most often used, for which project types, and how successful they were.
The survey was distributed to 2,023 individuals representing 913 unique organizations. A total of 389 individual complete or partially complete responses were received, which represent 162 unique Danish organizations. The prevalent respondents were senior project managers and project managers.
In total, 65% of the individuals replied that most of the time or always a defined project management methodology was applied. Only 6% reported that they never apply a defined project management methodology in their organization. The most common response as to why a defined project management methodology is not applied in the respondent’s organization is that the organization is not ready to adapt an external project management methodology and needs to build up knowledge and experience.
In total 61% of the respondents replied that they apply other project management methodologies than the options listed in the survey. The term “other” refers to the situation where a respondent reported using a project management methodology that listed as an option to choose from in the survey. Each respondent had the option to report multiple unlisted project management methodologies. These unlisted project management methodologies tend to be internally developed project management methodologies or unlisted external project management methodologies.
The most commonly applied project management methodology on the list was Scrum, where 44% of respondents reported applying Scrum, closely followed by PRINCE2 ® with 43% of respondents; the third most commonly applied project management methodology is Half Double Methodology with 34% of respondents.
Most of the respondents reported that the project management methodology applied in their organization is half standardized, half tailored to the organization. The most common project type reported is Information System (software) Projects. This pattern also accounts for those respondents who reported that they apply other project management methodologies than the options listed.
The respondents replied that more than 53% of projects completed in the past 12 months were completed on time; the corresponding number for completed on budget was 59%, and the corresponding number for completed on goal was 69%. The percentage of projects completed in the past 12 months achieving or exceeding the expected customer satisfaction was 59%, and the corresponding number for return of value was 53% of completed projects.
