Through an analysis of both Jill Magid's artwork "Surveillance Shoe" (2000-7) and Bruno Latour's notion of "oligopticon" (as developed in "Paris, Invisible City" (1998)), the paper discusses the notion of surveillance. We address that surveillance is an always specific, multiple, and situated phenomenon, and thus question dominant metaphors in surveillance discourse, e.g. panopticon and Big Brother.
