Abstract

LGBTQIA+ movements that fight for basic human rights have led to various global movements in the last two decades. A 2021 UCLA School of Law Williams Institute report stated that social acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals across 56 countries has increased since 1981. The Philippine constitution enshrines the dignity and equality of all people. The country is a signatory to the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Advocating for the SOGIESC bill means that supporters must point out their shared identity with those for and against their cause. Kapwa is a central and core value in the social interactions of Filipinos, and this is exemplified in the Filipino belief system and practices. The move to gather support for LGBTQIA+ rights and the acceptance of the queer community means that queer activists must balance similarities with cis and heterosexuals while celebrating diversity and differences as individuals.
