Painted Attic Pottery in Etruria: - the case of Tarquinia

From the renaissance until the present, there has been continuous findings of Greek pottery in Etruria. A large part of that pottery is Attic black- and red-figure. Accordingly, the discussion of the exchange between Athens and Etruria is a continuous tradition stretching back to the very roots of classical archaeology. However, a number of important questions remain unresolved and the nature of the interaction between the Etruscan consumers and the Athenian producers of this pottery is still far from clear to us. A focal point of the scholarly debate has been whether this interaction between Athens and Etruria was deliberate and direct or haphazard and indirect.
This paper advocates the position that the export of painted pottery from Athens and the import into Etruria was not random but deliberate and based on precise knowledge on both sides. This view is based on a compilation of evidence, notably a review of Attic black- and red-figure pottery from Tarquinia, where a strikingly clear pattern emerges.
