By reconstructing the contemporary discussion on womens emancipation, and its roots, the article traces the motifs and liberation projects in A Doll's House back to Camilla Collett, the leading Norwegian pioneer on womens liberation. The article thus discusses problematic issues that easily get lost when one approaches A Doll's House with theoretical anchorage in modern feminist theory.
