Abstract

The article presents an analysis of an abolitionist text by Pierre Samuel Du Pont published in the Physiocratic journal Éphémérides du citoyen in 1771. Du Pont’s text combines economic calculation with a retelling of Jean-François de Saint-Lambert’s sentimental short story “Ziméo” in order to make a particularly effective argument. Kjærgård’s article presents both the calculate and the aesthetic parts of the text and argues that particularly the textual tableaus of “Ziméo” are of a political ambivalence that makes the political “message” of the text more difficult to determine than has been acknowledged in recent scholarly literature.
