Abstract

With increasing overall survival of rectal cancer, quality of life (QoL) and functional outcome (FO) gain importance. Sphincter preserving surgery with anterior resection has been the standard surgical treatment for mid and high rectal tumors in the past decades, whereas low tumors traditionally have resulted in abdominoperineal excisions. However, sphincter preservation often comes at the cost of bowel dysfunction, typically referred to as Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS). This chapter will cover symptoms, occurrence, risk factors, pathophysiology and treatment of LARS.
