Looking for Trust: An ANT investigation of the history of the Danish DNA Database

Trust and surveillance are often seen as opposites. Trust is regularly characterized as the glue that holds society together, while surveillance is seen as corrosive. However, in Scandinavia high levels of trust and surveillance coexist. It is therefore interesting to investigate if there is a connection between these phenomena and ask what is the role of trust in the spread of surveillance in Scandinavia?
The aim of this paper is: 1) to investigate the role of trust in the history of the Danish DNA database and 2) to experiment with Actor-Network-Theory (ANT) as an ap-proach in studies of trust.
