Abstract
The idea of a connection within the classical Greek triad of knowledge, ethics and art has been heavily criticized, and rightly so, as it seems to be fundamentally wrong to subjugate art under the censorship of ethics and knowledge. However, the question still remains whether art in general, and literature in particular, might retain an internal connection with both the true and the good without falling into the trap of subjecting it to be a mere instrument in their service.
In this paper I focus on what I propose to be a revelatory force within literature and use this perspective in an attempt to re-establish the internal connection between art, knowledge and ethics. The basis of this proposed revelatory force lies in a discussion of the philosophy of literature found in the works of philosopher and theologian K.E. Løgstrup and novelist Karl Ove Knausgård’s reflections on aesthetics.
