Kan en konstituent være både subjekt og objekt på samme tid? om indlejrede infinitivsætninger på dansk

According to Mikkelsen (1911:109, §39), hende ’her’ in De så hende reparere bilen ’They saw her repair the car’ is both the object of se ’see’ and the subject of reparere ’repair’. Hansen & Heltoft (2011:1419) suggest a similar analysis, whereas Diderichsen (1946:217, §86) and Togeby (2003: 80, 212-215) suggest that the object of se ’see’ is the entire embedded infi nitive clause hende reparere bilen ’her repair the car’. I agree with the latter analysis, and I will compare this construction to the related De forbød hende at reparere bilen ’They forbade her to repair the car’. Both are often characterised as ’accusative with infi nitive’, and both receive the construction coeffi cient O’:S’’ in Hansen & Heltoft (2011). I will focus on the differences between the two constructions, and I will suggest the following difference: In the construction with se ’see’, it is all of hende reparere bilen ’her repair the car’ which is the object of the matrix verb, and hende ’her’ is the subject of reparere ’repair’. In the construction with forbyde ’forbid’, it is only hende ’her’ which is the object of the matrix verb, and the subject of reparere ’repair’ is an invisible element (a so-called empty category kategori) which is coreferent with hende ’her’.
