Abstract
Why have women artists, authors, and theorists been so underrepresented in humanistic research? In this article I will investigate the skewed gender balance of my own previous research, and of the four volumes of A Cultural History of the Avant-garde in the Nordic Countries (2012-2022), in which I have been involved as contributor and editor. I will try to under-stand why the inequity has been so pronounced and unnoticed by examining the academic culture, the research has been created in. Here I will partly draw on my own experiences, partly on a qualitative study of testimonies from other female researchers. My thesis is that the lack of attention paid to gender in research is closely linked to a gendered and often sexist university culture.
