Abstract

Intercultural competence is one of the core competences in the professional use of a foreign language. In addition to linguistic and cultural knowledge, this competence is based on intercultural understanding, which enables us to act appropriately, i. e., interculturally competent, at the interfaces between different cultures, especially in professional communication situations. While intercultural competence is the subject of much research and foreign language teaching, there is little empirically based work on intercultural understanding in German-language research. This article deals with the concept of intercultural understanding in the context of professional communication. First, a conceptual classification is provided. Based on the results of an interview study on intercultural cooperation, it is then shown to which aspects intercultural understanding - and intercultural competence - can refer in professional communication, and it is discussed how intercultural understanding can be promoted at the interface with intercultural competence.
