In a Grammaticality Judgement test of main clause and embedded sentential negation, yes-no questions, and wh-questions, performance was less accurate on embedded constructions than on main clause constructions across Experienced and Inexperienced L1 Danish and L1 Finnish learners of English . Likewise, accuracy scores were higher for negation than for questions across L2 groups. Comparisons between groups revealed that Inexperienced L1 Finnish learners accepted do-support in embedded wh-questions more often than the other L2 groups and the native speaker baseline. This may be interpreted as an instance of cross-linguistic overcorrection, given that neither English nor Finnish embedded wh-questions have I°-to-C° movement. No other between-group differences were observed. The results support Hawkins’ Modulated Structure building model claiming that the acquisition of L2 syntax involves incremental structure building.
