Abstract

This paper explores how business models respond to unanticipated shocks. In particular we investigate how business models have or have not responded in the pandemic. To this we employ a single case study design with eight embedded cases, where we study business models of companies, which emerge as part of AirAsia's digital ecosystem. Consequently, antecedents and consequences of opening up as well as establishing open business models through their response is investigated. Our study is well grounded in the digital transformation and dynamic capabilities theory. The practical implications from our study help both managers and ecosystem orchestrators and ecosystem members to effectively respond to unanticipated shocks.
