abstract = "We present gas-phase infrared (IR) spectra of protonated dihydropentacene, the hydrogen functionalised form of the linear, catacondensed, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), pentacene. Experimental IR spectra are obtained by IR multiple-photon dissociation spectroscopy measurements, while density functional theory calculations provide theoretical spectra. The comparison with the gas-phase spectrum of protonated pentacene reveals the effect of H-atom functionalisation on the IR spectra of PAHs thereby enabling the identification of such species in the interstellar medium.",
