N2 - This article identifies and analyses political dimensions of the life and work of the distinguished poet, scholar and teacher Eric Mottram, late professor of English and American Literature at King’s College, University of London. Emphasizing his lifelong socialist commitments, it discusses Mottram’s engagements with Marxism and existentialism, psychoanalysis and phenomenology, and their influence upon his literary and cultural interests, writing and teaching. Though influenced in later life by various structuralist and post-structuralist currents of thought, from Foucault and Derrida to Deleuze and Guattari, it argues, Eric Mottram retained an overriding admiration for those radical artists and intellectuals who had long informed and inspired his own work, not least Jean-Paul Sartre.
