This article investigates the writings of Danish science journalistBørge Michelsen from 1939 to 1956. As part of the internationalsocial relations of science movement in the period, Michelsentransformed science journalism from mere reporting on issuespertaining to science into performing the social function ofscience journalism: advancing and enacting the social relationsof science. Based on analyses of Michelsen's articles and otherinitiatives, this study suggests that the social function ofscience journalism practiced by Michelsen showed many new andconflicting aspects. From a boundary-work perspective, it isargued that, through science journalism, Michelsen not onlyhelped establish new cultural boundaries of science, but alsodid anti-boundary-work. The notion of anti-boundary-work impliesbreaking down existing barriers between science and society, all the while establishing new links to reinforce mutual relationsbetween scientists and policy-makers, between scientists andjournalists, and between science and the public. Finally, inthe concluding remarks, the contemporary significance of Michelsen'ssocial function of science journalism is discussed.
