Electron capture and ionization of 33-TeV Pb ions in gas targets

Abstract

The total cross sections for electron capture and ionization of 33-TeV Pb ions in argon, krypton and xenon gas targets were measured. Electron capture from pair production dominates the total capture cross sections. The ionization cross sections from capture experiment (growth) and ionization experiment (decay) curves were compared. The results depicted the effective ionization cross sections in solid targets to be 25% larger than in gases for ionization experiment.
