Juana Inés de la Cruz' poem "Primero Sueno" (1692) lets the soul, in a nightly travel, explore different methods of gaining access to knowledge of God's creation. In the article I show how the conflict between knowledge and faith is worked out differently in this 17th century Catholic poem than in the Protestant works of the same period. In Sor Juana's intricate poem, failure to achieve perfect knowledge is a proof of the difference between man and God. More controversially, the poem utilizes the standard baroque topoi of dream, night and change to write woman into an universe where knowledge is found.
