By the beginning ofthe Cold War the idea to modify the weather had gained enormaus popularity. From the 1950s onwards, the new weather control technology, mainly developed within the context of the U.S. military, was being applied in many countries around the world. This article focuses on the activities at the Institut flir Physik der Atmosphäre in Southern Bavaria, where fog dissipation and hail control were prirnarily developed for civilian and local purposes. This example depicts the relationship between the research conducted there and American developments, and demonstrates how the local community became apart of the Cold War by applying this dual-use technology. It is furthermore argued that by promoting weather control technology, the ambitions were to occupy the atmosphere not only physically but also on an ideational level.
