Abstract
This chapter presents the theoretical and conceptual framework applied in this volume to analyse and interpret the intricate social, political, and economic networks that characterized northern Jordan during the 1st millennium BCE. Building on recent advances in complexity theory and network science, this chapter lays out the overarching narrative built on the dual concepts of complexity and networks to develop a suitable research approach centred on multi-level networks and multi-scalar analysis. Setting the thematic scene for the volume, this chapter explores the complexities that shaped the historical landscape and provides crucial context for the subsequent archaeological investigations.
