Becoming a Parent in a Digitized Age: The Mediatized Conditions of the Transition to Parenthood

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a comparative case study on the role of digital media in the lives of Danish first-time parents (2012-15). Findings show that key practices in the transition to parenthood are closely entwined with digital media use e.g. announcing pregnancy and birth, sharing news from the new family life, building parental family ties or seeking advice and guidance. On this basis, the presentation argues that digital media have become involved in framing and shaping expectations, social roles and rituals in this pivotal, first phase of family life. The characteristics and consequences of these mediatized conditions are discussed.
