One of the most prominent debates within the democratization literature has
revolved around the question of how to conceptualize democracy. Recent
contributions from two leading scholars in the field, Przeworski and O’Donnell,
show that this is still a contentious topic. Przeworski and O’Donnell each offer
their newest formulas and their most thoroughly developed theoretical arguments
so far about democracy and democratization – with different implications for our
understanding of contemporary democracies.
