Abstract

This chapter explores how the return of European nationalisms haunt post-World War II international alliances and their attempt to harmonise European higher education systems. In Denmark, this is reflected in recent higher education policy initiatives, such as the drastic reductions in the number of English-language university programs. Since the 1990s, the Bologna Process has transformed the European higher education systems through the complex construction of the so-called European Higher Education Area. Today, the virulent calls for a return to the homogenous Nation may be turning the tables with regards to the prospects and promises of European integration through education. The chapter argues that the return of nationalist solutions in higher education is embedded in a wider-reaching European political crisis. The nationalisms of the past seem to have been reawakened in a neo-nationalist configuration opposing both the power “above us” (the EU) and those ranked “below us” (regional EU migrants in the form of foreign students). The chapter argues that while we obey the new protectionist national laws, justice remains yet to come.
