Abstract
Very large electric fields form spontaneously within films of seemingly prosaic chemicals such as nitrous oxide or propane. We describe how the discovery of this
unexpected phenomenon took place and how we attempt to understand the nature of the new class of spontaneously polarized materials, resembling ferroelectrics,
which these observations herald.
