Abstract

Lexicography is going through an "identity crisis". The challenges are threefold. First, the emergence and application of new technologies is having a major impact on almost every aspect of lexicography. Second, the business model of dictionary publishing is becoming obsolete. As a cultural practice, lexicography faces serious challenges. The traditional model of financing dictionaries, developed around print technology, does not match the new developments of the digital age. Third, there is increasing competition from other types of information sources, such as search engines, machine translation and apps, which can be interpreted as a silent critique of the quality, relevance and accessibility of dictionaries in the context of the digital age. Lexicography urgently needs "innovation" to avoid falling into a deeper crisis. The word "innovation" refers not only to the improvement of methods and technologies, but also to a transformation of the whole field. From the perspective of technology-enabled lexicography, "technological innovation" in lexicography means not only the adoption of new methods and technologies to improve the lexicographic process, but also the presentation of dictionaries in more novel and user-friendly ways to target users, and the development of entirely new lexicographic products.
