Project Details

Description

This complex healthcare intervention aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with functional somatic disorders (FSD) by providing coordinated care across primary and
secondary sectors.
This research project is a qualitative evaluation of the intervention: The Research Clinic for Functional Disorders at Silkeborg Regional Hospital. This project aims to achieve a deeper understanding of the critical mechanisms, contextual factors, and user responses to the intervention. We specifically explore critical mechanisms, such as the legitimizing setting of the hospital supporting the diagnostic assessment for patients who may have lost faith in the healthcare system, as well as integrated, coherent care that empowers patients to collaborate with their GP in identifying the best treatment and self-management strategies.

Around 10% of the Danish population has a functional somatic disorder, with 1-2%
experiencing debilitating symptoms. Current diagnostic procedures for FSD are circuitous, complex, and lack coherence, with high healthcare utilization and costs. Patients face significant challenges in the Danish healthcare system, leading to distress, lower quality of life, and an increased risk of chronic illness.

The Research Clinic for Functional Disorders was established to address these
challenges by providing interdisciplinary diagnostic assessment and treatment
guidance for patients and general practitioners. This research project engages qualitative research methods, following users throughout the patient pathway. We will provide insight into the organization and user perspectives of integrated healthcare services through interviews and observation of patients, hospital clinicians, and general practitioners.
The results will complement a quantitative evaluation in a randomized controlled trial
currently underway. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods will provide a
comprehensive understanding of the intervention, which is crucial for gaining insight
into its impact on patients, and its potential for broader implementation.
