New approach for evaluating pesticide toxicity on fertility

Description

Over the last decades human male fertility and semen quality has decreased. The causal factors are not yet identified, but one focus is on the widespread use of compounds with reprotoxic properties such as pesticides. Before new compounds are released, they undergo risk assessment that includes effects on reproduction in animals and litter size in rats after natural mating as a significant element
in this assessment.
The project will provide fundamental knowledge on in vivo and in vitro
fertilization and on sperm gene function that can improve prediction of reprotoxic effects of pesticides and other reprotoxic compounds.
