Description

The main hypothesis of this PhD-project is that there is a continuous interplay between a cultural environment and association and expectation mechanisms in the human brain with regards to emotions related to music. In order to test this hypothesis, special designed popular music structures of a familiar and an unfamiliar culture will be played to Western, African and Arab listeners.
The results of this research can be applied when designing music for anxiety and pain reduction, e.g., to be used at hospitals, and is useful in music therapy with mentally disabled or patients suffering from brain injury. Also, the results can be applied for development of new mood-classification software for music players.
