Description

Funded by AUFF NOVA, this project investigates the energy transfer from larger-scale currents and barotropic tides to higher frequency internal tides and vertical mixing over rough seamount topography as drivers of biodiversity. The study area is Great Meteor Seamount (GMS), a submarine giant located in the subtropical North Atlantic. Previous estimates suggest that 25-30% of the global energy dissipation occurs in the deep ocean over topographic features such as seamounts and ridges. Kinetic energy dissipation in such areas of intense flow-topography interaction is vital for sessile benthic organisms as a mechanism of food supply keeping organic material in suspension through processes generated by enhanced internal wave action.
