Layman's description
This project will validate a new strategy for mitigation of methane emissions from liquid manure (slurry) storage tanks under practical storage conditions. The technology is based on the stimulation of microbial methane oxidation in natural surface crusts through active-control ventilation. An ongoing research project has delivered proof of concept at pilot-scale, and this calls for a new project with the following specific objectives:
i) development of a full-scale technical solution applicable to an existing slurry storage tank with a tent cover;
ii) development of a technical solution to stabilise and protect the surface crust during import and export of slurry;
iii) characterisation of methanotrophs, their distribution and activity in crusts w/wo ventilation control; and
iv) quantification of methane migitation across a full year.
