Lutheranism and societal development in Denmark

Project: Research

See relations at Aarhus University

The aim of this project is to identify traces of Lutheran influence on worldview, culture, and society in Denmark understood as a confessional society. The project asks questions derived from central themes in Lutheran theology and the Lutheran understanding of social order as structured in three estates: the church, the household, and government. The project thus asks to the influence from the reconfiguration of the God-human relationship and to the twofold character of the Lutheran legacy. From here the project investigate models for authority represented in the Danish society and social cohesion developed through reciprocal duties with a special focus on the household and poor-relief. This is seen as possible factors in a synchronisation of the Danish society with implication for the development from a household society during absolutism in 18th century to democracy and welfare state in 19th century.
