High nitrogen utilisation by phase feeding of protein

Description

The purpose is to create scientific knowledge to divide a given amount of protein optimally throughout the lactation period and to demonstrate phase feeding of protein in different barn designs. Overall, the purpose is to increase the nitrogen utilisation in dairy cows for the benefit of resource utilisation, economy, water environment and climate.

The basic idea of this project is to obtain significant positive effects on the dairy cows' milk production and nitrogen utilisation by phase feeding of protein throughout the lactation period. At present, knowledge is lacking about for how long the higher yield lasts after cessation of extra allocation of protein and which effect phase feeding has on nitrogen and feed utilisation during the lactation period. Furthermore, knowledge is lacking about whether a very short allocation of extra protein, e.g. 700 g/day in 3 or 7 days after calving, results in the desired effect on yield in early lactation. Short allocation is relevant in herds with no automatic allocation of concentrate.

The activities are organised in work packages 1 and 2 within the framework of AU-Foulum and SEGES-Cattle, respectively. Work package 1 includes activities that create knowledge to divide a given amount of protein optimally throughout the lactation period. Work package 2 includes activities that demonstrate phase feeding of protein in different barn designs.
