The demand for trustworthy organic vegetables and potatoes is rapidly rising but cannot be met by current agronomic methods. Improved soil quality is critical for intensive, cost-effective organic high-value crop production but organic animal manure is a limited resource that can only fulfil a small fraction of the total fertilizer need. The current alternative is conventional manure, which damages the trustworthiness of organic crops. There is thus a pressing need for new agronomic methodologies for improved soil quality, nitrogen use and crop productivity.
We propose to develop and implement new diverse and intensive organic cropping systems using double cropping, plant based fertilizers and reduced soil disturbance for improved soil quality, eliminating the need for conventional manure, decreasing the environmental impact of organic vegetables while boosting productivity. This will be achieved by:
1) Designing organic systems with double cropping and optimized cold season plant cover for improved C and N cycling and soil quality;
2) developing new efficient plant-based fertilizers ensuring recycling and adequate availability of nutrients to the cropping system.
The intensive and diverse production systems will be suited to the specialized and large-volume organic plant food production of today, making it independent of animal manure and bringing higher credibility and robustness to farmers based on agro-ecological services of fertile soils and optimized N efficiency.
