Project: Research

See relations at Aarhus University

The purpose is to diversify fishing in the Belt Sea through the use of discard fish for high-value feed for zoos, pets and aquariums. These fish include small herring and small bottom net mackerel; but also eelgrass, cuttlefish and other species that are currently without commercial interest.
The secondary purpose is to create financial incentives for anglers to comply with the discard ban.
The project include mapping of which discard fish are caught and in what quantities. Determine the nutritional composition and the nutritional value of fat, protein and minerals, as well as selling sample batches to the target groups in order to end up in an actual development of the sale.
The project intend to show that economic sustainability can be created in the fisheries in the western Baltic Sea, which is currently hard hit by restrictions in the cod fishery and in the eel fishery by diversifying the fishery (use).

The project is funded by European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and the Danish Fisheries Agency
