DFF Inge Lehmann: The impacts of Arctic Ocean freshening across the land-ocean-atmosphere continuum

Project: Research

See relations at Aarhus University

The cryosphere is rapidly melting and increasing the freshwater content of the Arctic Ocean. Thawing ice sheets, glaciers and permafrost introduce large fluxes of organic matter (OM) to the coastal ocean which can ultimately influence marine carbon cycling. The fate of this OM remains largely unknown, but there is some indication that it may be highly bioavailable, suggesting that when mobilised it is rapidly metabolised and may feedback to climate change. Additionally, OM may be volatilized and form atmospheric aerosols on which clouds develop, creating another pathway for climate feedbacks.
