At the Edge of Language - An Investigation into the Limits of Human Grammar

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

This project deals with the borderlands between what is possible and impossible in the grammatical systems of language with a focus on borders between clauses, more specifically their left edge. Theoretical and experimental syntax will be combined in pursuit of the overall goal which is to investigate how a fundamental property of human language interacts a unique characteristic in Danish and the other Mainland Scandinavian languages. Danish is a particularly intersting object of inquiry in connection with extraction across clausal boundaries because the syntax of Danish displays an exceptionally wide range of possibilities in this area. However, we still don't know what exactly the limits are. In order to answer this question, comparative studies of Danish and English will be carried out in an interdisciplinary approach, primarily working within the fields of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics and second language acquisition.
