A comparison of two biphasic waveforms and impact of oxygen on myocardial injury following cardioversion

The long held belief that oxygen is always beneficial for ill and injured patients is being challenged by recent studies suggesting that excessive oxygenation may result in free-radical mediated tissue damage, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality.
The aim of this study is to to compare the effect of hyperoxia and room air on myocardial injury following cardioversion.
Patients for elective cardioversion are randomized to room air or 100% oxygen in 3 minutes before- and 30 minutes following cardioversion.
Biomarkers for myocardial injury will be measured before and 4 hours after cardioversion.
