Project title: Organic matter dynamics and microbiology in deep soil


The soil reservoir below 0.2 m corresponds to more C than biomass, atmospheric CO2 and top 0.2 m layer. Despite the importance of subsoil C dynamics in mitigating climate change and enhancing soil fertility, there is very little systematic research on C retention and factors that drive this effect in this pool. The main objective of this project is to increase our understanding of the C dynamics and microbiology in deep soil. The specific objectives are: 1) To quantify C retention by different plant species in deeper soil layers; 2) To investigate whether soil C inputs via roots and root exudates to subsoil have other effects on C turnover than such C inputs to the topsoil; 3) To investigate how root C inputs in deeper soil layers affect the diversity and functioning of the microbial populations.
