SCIENTIFIC FOCUS AND AIM
My research focusses on the mathematical modeling of the complex interplay of acetogenic
metabolism and electrochemistry within a microbial electrosynthesis system. My ultimate goal is to
contribute to the development of microbial biotechnologies for CO2 valorization and storage.
Susmit completed his Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) in 2022 on the topic ‘numerical investigations on microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) in a sandstone petroleum reservoir’. During his Ph.D, Susmit introduced a new MEOR model by considering the combined impacts of wettability alteration and interfacial tension reduction on MEOR efficiency. He also proposed a novel hybrid economical and ecofriendly EOR technique named, low salinity augmented microbial flooding, and performed comprehensive optimization studies for its profitable implementation under harsh oil-field conditions. Before joining Ph.D at IIT Madras, Susmit completed his B.Tech and M.Tech degrees in Biotechnology from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University, Bhubaneswar, India in 2016. As a potdoc at Aarhus University, Susmit is now applying his expertise obtained during his Ph.D to mathematically model the bioprocesses of microbial electrosynthesis under the adept supervision of Jo Philips and Jacopo Catalano.
