Steffen is a professor and a research fellow at Leibniz Center of Financial Research SAFE at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.
His research is on private and institutional investor decision-making and financial markets. It contributes to a better understanding of financial markets and their participants. It is supposed to aid financial institutions and policymakers in increasing economic welfare. In particular, Steffen has worked on financial advice, investor sentiment, the effect o experiences on investment decisions, consumption of private households, and the effect of ambiguity on households. His research is mainly empirical, employs large administrative datasets, and often uses field studies. He actively works with partners from the industry to generate data and to be able to address relevant and novel research questions.
His research has appeared in leading international journals like the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Finance.
He has also been involved in policy work by co-authoring reports for the ministry of consumer protection and providing reports on the use of derivative securities by private investors and total trading costs in neo-brokerages.
